Up Close and Personal: Sue and Julie
Sue Johnson
has written over fifteen articles for quilting and craft magazines in the United States and Canada, including Quilt World, Threads, and Crafts. Her work has also been featured in The Fiberworks Sourcebook and The Crazy Quilt Handbook.
Sue has been president since 1980 of Gramma's Graphics, Inc., a mail-order business specializing in blueprinting and sunprinting kits (for more information on Gramma's Graphics, call 1-804-462-0884). A mother of three, host to eight foreign-exchange students, and a long-distance grandmother, she uses ideas from her years as a kindergarten and preschool teacher to enliven communications with her grandchildren.

Julie Carlson, Sue's daughter-in-law, is a manuscript editor for the university presses at Yale and Harvard and a ghostwriter of two scholarly books. A 1988 honors graduate of Yale and an alumnae of the Radcliffe Publishing Course, Julie has been editing in-house and from her home since 1987.
Julie also taught nursery school for five years, an experience that broadened her understanding of young children and their families. Her personal adventure with parenting her first baby far from extended family inspired some of her more imaginative communications. Creative emails, phone calls, and packages continue to nurture the connection between her three boys--Nick (13), Charlie (9), and Will (3)--and their four long-distance grandparents.
